For several years, there have been several myths making rounds about the HGV industry. However, the truth of the matter is totally very different from what has been circulating around. Some of the outspoken myths about the HGV industry are as follows:

1. Myth: HGV is Dirty Industry

Truth:  despite the fact that indeed a few jobs in the industry are not very clean especially those that involve HGV maintenance, most of the jobs are very clean. HGV drivers usually have clean uniforms and the nature of their job is not dirty at all as they always portray a clean image and their HGVs are washed clean on regular basis. To run any successful business today, it has to reflect a clean image at all times. HGV industry strives to reflect a clean image at all times.

2. Myth: HGV is male dominated industry

Truth:  There is a gradual and steady rise of female HGV drivers despite the fact that the majority of HGV drivers are male. There is a lot of information that focuses on the steady rise of the number of females opting for careers in the HGV industry and sooner rather than later, it will be a common site to see female HGV drivers on the road.

3. Myth: HGV driving is a lonely job

Truth: HGV industry is one of the industries that have the most flexible working hours. Therefore, it is entirely up to the HGV driver to decide the nature of his or her working hours. There are people who prefer working on their own while others prefer having company while working. In the HGV industry, there is freedom of choice for drivers to decide how long they would like to work and whether they want to work near their home towns or far away from them.

4. Myth: HGV driving is about moving pallets from one place to another.

Truth:There are several different types of jobs that are available in the HGV industry and not just moving pallets from one point to the next. There are several other jobs in the HGV industry such as:

• Driving Box trailers meant for carrying cages to supermarkets

• Car transporters that deliver cars to various dealers

• Driving Bulk tankers for gases, petrochemicals, powders, milk as well as other types of liquids to various destinations.

• Driving Multi-drop vehicles used for multi-drops within and around city centres

• Driving Curtainsiders that transport bags, palletized loads among others

• Driving tippers that strictly focuses on quarry work both local as well as long distance

• Driving specialized units for garbage  collection, brick carrier, skips lorries and many more

• Driving Flatbeds used to transport goods unsuitable for other forms of HGVs such as box trailer or curtainsider

5. Myth: HGV is a dying industry

Truth: For any economy to remain vibrant, HGV industry has to be on the forefront. Otherwise how else would goods reach the end users? Boats, trains as well as planes can only do so much. However, HGVs are the most cost effective and efficient mode of transport as far as delivering goods to the eventual end user is concerned. Therefore, it's not possible to run successful business efficiently while keeping the operational cost down without the use of HGVs.

6. Myth: There are no jobs available for HGV drivers

Truth: The HGV workforce not only has great potential to get bigger than what it is now but also has plenty of jobs available at the moment. Therefore, for any job seekers out there, consider opting for a career in HGVs because, according to research, it has been suggested that there will be a shortfall of well over 100,000 drivers in the workforce by the year 2010. Despite the shortfall, these jobs will be very competitive and will require both commitment as well as experience to be hired as HGV drivers. The constant arrival of migrant workers will definitely not make it any easier to get these jobs in this field.
